This is a project that was born out of sheer "in-the-moment inspiration" on the evening of March 11, 2021.
Devin and I were driving south on Hwy 61 crossing the Mississippi River in Hastings, MN and I made the very casual comment that "I wonder if anyone has ever photographed every bridge crossing over the Mississippi". As we drove through town, we frenetically began talking about the notion of starting at the Headwaters of the Mississippi River in Lake Itasca up in northern MN and photographing every crossing from there to the Gulf of Mexico.
By the time we reached our dinner destination that evening, the idea had gained so much excitement and momentum, we'd learned that a) NOBODY has done this project, either in photo OR video, and b) there were 183 crossings from Minnesota to Louisiana - 116 of which are in or connect to MN. At dinner that evening with our friends David and Christine, we shared the idea and they shared in our excitement as we talked about publishing a book, producing a documentary, and even teaming up with a conservancy group to use the project as a fund raiser.
Within the next 12 hours, I created the logo (as seen on this page), we chose our road trip dates to span over the first week of July 2021, set up a one-way mini van rental for the epic road trip from MN to LA, and purchased one-way flights home from New Orleans. It's happening!
